Traders and Traitors Stavin DragonBlessed Book 2 eBook Loren K Jones

This sequel was an enjoyable return to an interesting world. There is something almost episodic about the way the books in this series are developed that I found to be a nice change of pace from most fantasy novels. Characters are pretty believable, there are very few noticeable proofreading/editing issues, the novel is a little on the short side but is by no means overpriced. This was well worth the time and money, and I'm definitely still interested in any additions to the series.

Traders and Traitors Stavin DragonBlessed Book 2 eBook Loren K Jones Reviews

Love the story. Interesting characters that you actually care about. Wish they would have more storyline on Sharindis then it would get 5 stars. I like stories where the "underdog" in this case a man that is not tall Greek God material not only survived multiple attempts on his life but thrives and expands. I get tired of those books where the hero was destined hero from the start. Stavin had to work hard to overcome people's perceived ideas of his shortcomings and go on to greatness.
I like how Stavin and the rest of the characters are developing, especially his relationship with Barvil, who continues be a father figure (Stavin seems to have lots of them Kalin, Charvil, his own father, Barvil, of course)...

More of the history of the Luxor empire is revealed, as well as the trading world that holds all the old provinces together.

Overall, as you would expect, Stavin is growing in both ability and renown, while still retaining his humanity and sense of decency.

This book and series is highly recommended.
This is a good story. I am glad I started with book two in the series, because all the action apparently happens in this book. I didn't like that promotions were based on number of kills, even if the dead were bad guys. I read this book cover to cover, but I have no desire to read any more in this mercenary series. Too many innocent, likable characters are killed off, which always makes a book less enjoyable for me. If the author takes the time to make a character sympathetic, then don't have that character die just to produce bathos. Works of fiction should be enjoyable to read, not as irritating as newspaper headlines.
I will start with what I can say bad about this one and the first book is the names! The names of characters are confusing at times. This is not the first book I have read with confusing names but it does make keeping 2nd and minor characters acknowledged. The names is the only bad and it is more of a minor nuisance and the creator / writers style to put them in place (I assume it is for there enjoyment or a cultural perspective?). A quality book it is as good as the first book. I have purchased the 3rd book and will be reading it next. All around worth the time and cost to read!
These books are like the Nathan Lowell "The Golden Age of the Solar Clipper" books in that they are compelling and very interesting and I can't quite figure out why. This book was a one sitting read for me last night, I didn't get to bed until 300am, to me that is a good recommendation for a book, if you skip sleep and burn through it all at once.
It is a new year for Stavin and with it a new trading season. Traveling through the region with a trade caravan is just as dangerous as last year, if not more so with old and new enemies making an appearance including people able to use powerful magic. He sees less action than the previous season, but the quality of those enemies have certainly improved.

The story is told in the same style as book 1 with little apparent overarching plot, although now some of the events seem to be related and something big is apparently brewing. As book 1 it is mostly told from Stavin's point of view with the occassional short switch to for example Stavin's wife at home or a villain or two. Entertaining, and I am looking forward to the bigger plot which I hope is comming because one more trade trip would become repetitive.

The thing that makes me wonder is the position of magic within the world. It is apparently rare, but I found the authorities and Stavin reacting really dismissive to four mages dominating a whole town or mercenaries being enspelled with a suicide spell. I am assuming there are some limitations to it, otherwise anything being able to completely control a town should lead to a witchhunt just to make sure nothing remains. I would also expect traders to refuse to hire Stavin in the future or use him for high risk tasks. He is drawing way too much attention. Dealing with bandits is one thing, but groups of professional mercs and assassins actively hunting down Stavin pose a serious threat to simple merchants.

All in all, an entertaining read that leaves me wondering a bit about some aspects of the world and hoping for a change in pace in book 3.
This book is a decent sequel to the first, as both plot and characters continue to develop. I enjoyed the first one enough to immediately buy the second, but I am having third thoughts about the third. I ran into a lot of difficulty in reading this book. I started on my Fire, switched and read on my phone app for a while, read on my laptop up to about halfway, and got back to my , where it promptly told me I was not allowed to download this already downloaded book, and never would load back up on my . Had to finish on my phone, which is not near as good a device for reading as my .

If you are going to put Copy Protection on a book, make damned sure it does not interfere with your paying customers experience.....or you will run out of paying customers
