Reading John Harvey is like watching a master impressionist artist at work. With a few deft strokes he manages to capture the character and the setting whilst all the time spinning a story. There is a section in this book describing a disappearance in Cornwall that is a triumph of writing - it deals with several characters who are all new and also sets the scene in Cornwall's peculiar landscape. Despite this Harvey achieves a master class for his contemporaries in how to do it. Grayson and Walker are maturing nicely and I look forward to hearing more of them. If you like English procedurals this is essential reading.Product details

A good read!!!
This is the first book I have read of John Harvey's. I will certainly read more. He has a wonderful style and keeps you guessing about who the culprit{s] is. I liked his style very much and I confess that I read it in 4 days; I found it difficult to put down.
This is the kind of story telling I devour. Well developed characters, believable situations and lots of tension to hold the reader in suspense.
Well. Thank goodness I have finished this book. It's 2am AGAIN!! Could not put it down. Keeps you guessing up to,the end. I am a big fan of Mr Harvey, having read all the Resnick books. I very much warmed to Will and Helen too. Thank you again for a great read. Well written. Fast paced. Great characters and an excellent plot. Very highly recommended.
John Harvey writes very, very well. His secondary characters are beautifully drawn and evoke commitment by the reader from beginning to end. That's where his work peaks. His investigators, Grayson & Walker, are shallow, barely credible, and invoke neither interest nor sympathy from the reader. This is a lot closer to chick-lit than a mystery. If you want chick-lit with an undertone of police procedural, it's a 5 star book. But if you want a mystery/procedural with villains and victims who ring terribly true and invoke your emotions, it's barely a 3 star. That's a judgment that reflects just how bad Harvey is with his portrayal of Grayson & Walker, but also testament to how well he can draw the reader into the thoughts and feelings of the other actors in the drama. It's hard to escape the feeling that he has lost faith in the notion that "civilized people" can pay and support decent folk to keep the barbarians in check. Grayson & Walker as agents of justice?
One can only hope that either Harvey moves back to Nottingham, or better still, that Charles Resnick will transfer to Cambridge.
Absolutely loved it. Kind of book I didn't want to put down, one of John Harvey's best, (and I've read just about all of his works).
The 2nd book in the series is better even than the first, and that's saying something ! I'm super happy when I can sit down with a nice long book, and at 563 pages this most certainly fits the bill. A good long involved story regarding child abduction carried on over 2 or 3 decades, mainly centered on one woman who loses one child, only to remarry and have the same thing happen again, or has it ? That's the question, and you'll never guess the answer/ending until you read it. I wish the author would do more books in this series, the characters have come to life and it seems a shame to say goodbye, so soon.
